What is Tithe?

The word “tithe” comes from an Old English root meaning “one tenth.” It is the common English translation for the Old Testament Hebrew asar word group.

Throughout scripture there has been an acknowledgement and a command about returning one tenth of what we have to God. (Genesis 14:19-20, Genesis 28:20-22, Leviticus 27:30, Malachi 3:8-10).

Tithing is a form of worship of God —to honour Him as our ultimate provider and to be reminded that all of our resources belong to Him and are provided by Him. The tithe is sent to the South England Conference from where it is used to further God’s Work.

What is offering?

Offering, like tithe, is what one freely gives to God. Normally, offerings are given according to ones will as there is no specific amount. Offering is a form of expression of how much we love God and are thankful to Him for his abundant blessings in our lives.

Throughout the Bible we see many people give offerings to God and are moved because they love God and want to freely give to him. (Mark 12:41-44, Luke 6:38, 2 Corinthians 9:6-7).

The offering stays at the local church as is used for the functions and the running of the church (Heating, Electricity, Repairs etc). This is also used for our community programmes such as: Fellowship lunch, Senior Citizens Club, Haven Café, Children’s Ministries, Feeding the Homeless, Pathfinders and the many more ways where our local church makes an impact in the community.
