And they shall not teach one another or say to each other, “Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” Hebrews 8:11,12 Have you ever been walking along, minding your own business, when a certain scent catches your nose, and transports you vividly back to a memory from your childhood? Sometimes triggers (such as the sense of smell) cause us to instantly retrieve a memory from the furthest reaches of our mind. When we experience something new, the brain encodes the data, and stores it in the long-term memory. In theory, the long-term memory has an unlimited capacity! When we have difficulty remembering something, it is not because we have not stored the information in our memory. Storing information is the easy part: retrieving it is the hard part! Perhaps having an unlimited capacity in our long-term memories is one of the ways that we are like God (“let us make man in our image” Genesis 1:26). However, God does not have the same problems retrieving memories that we do! This makes it all the more amazing that in Hebrews 8 He makes an astounding promise: that He will remember our sins no more. He is choosing not to retrieve the memory of all the wrongs that we have committed. This is certainly something for us to celebrate! It also should inspire us in our dealings with one another. If God can choose not to bring to mind our transgressions against Him, then surely we should practice not bringing to mind the wrongs that other people have committed against us. Pastor M. Herel
