My Goals and Priorities

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct[a] your paths.  Proverbs 3:5, 6

Many people have a specific goal for their life: to be happy. Happiness is what they are seeking and their priorities are aligned in a fashion that will help them reach this goal. This seems a perfectly reasonable ambition, doesn’t it? After all, doesn’t God desire that His children be happy?

Well, it is true that God desires that His children be happy. The Bible makes it clear that happiness and contentment are good things. But how does God want His children to achieve this happiness? The Bible teaches that happiness is attainable, but happiness is never attained when happiness is the destination. Instead, happiness is achieved as a by-product of searching for something else.

Wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her; happy are those who hold her tightly. Proverbs 3:18

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Philippians 4:4

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4

The one searching for happiness will never truly find it. It is a futile task. The one who finds happiness, is the one searching for God. When they find Him, they are blessed to receive happiness as a free gift. Let us make God our goal, and His will our priority, and happiness is guaranteed to feature prominently!
